The WORD in other words (2018) by Brother Eugenio Orog SVD – Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City

Saturday 34th Week in Ordinary Time

“Beware of your heart… that the anxieties of daily life will trap you.” This was Jesus’ warning before his passion and death. Many anxieties of this world can be paralyzing. This happened to me when I was applying for a French visa so I could go on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, my town’s patroness. But I realized the embassy required a large amount of bank deposit which I didn’t have.

Before the creation of the European Union, while in Rome where I was attending a workshop seminar, I prayed quietly and constantly. It seemed the spirit was nudging me to try applying for a French visa once more. The French embassy in Rome was kinder, requiring only a letter of request from my friends in France. And quickly I got my visa.

In Psalm 46 there is a line: “Be still and know that I am God.” From the stillness and silence we can hear God’s voice. In the world we can be drowned with so many concerns and noises. Consequently, we need to have that relaxed disposition and enjoy waiting.

When I was already in Lourdes the picture that I chose in the workshop in Rome – a gushing river with plenty of trees at it its bank – was the same as what I saw in Lourdes, It was a deja vu experience; also a prayerful and profound experience for me.

Jesus Christ is the reason of everything. He is the God of order and harmony. We need only to remain alert and be forward looking as he warned us in the gospel.

In our life we can do this if we are not overwhelmed with so much anxieties and doubts. Beware – be aware. Then we can stay confident most of the time, if not all the time.
