Persistent Prayer

The WORD in other words (2021) by Fr Eusebio Manangbao SVD – Moutain Province

The word PUSH is fascinating. It can be an acronym that stands for persisting (praying) until something happens. It means living proactively rather than reactively and seeing the choices you make in life all the way through to completion, to the best of your ability despite the challenges. Hence, the need to pray always and not to lose heart.

All of us may agree that prayer is good for our healthy disposition. A prayerful person is usually a happy and healthy person. Prayer is our strength. More prayer, more power. Less prayer, less power. No prayer, no power.

Jesus teaches a parable about the importance of constant prayer. The widow in the parable had her request granted because of her persistence (prayerfulness).

Jesus gives a second teaching in the parable. If an unjust judge answers the pleas of a widow, how much more would God answer our prayers. But what about unanswered prayer?

This is always a mystery that we leave ultimately in the hands of God because we believe that prayer is always answered, although perhaps not in the way we have hoped. However, God sees the overall plan and knows what is best.

We may sometimes have to wait until the next life to see that overall plan and understand that God knew better. What’s important is to persevere in prayer.
