The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Glenn Paul Gomez SVD – Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City

Trust and faithfulness: these two words sum up today’s Gospel.
One can define trust as a firm belief in the reliability, truth or strength of someone or something. Therefore, to be trustworthy is to be relied on as honest and truthful.
In married life, in business, in any relationship or transaction, trust is very important. That’s why it has to start with little things. Jesus succinctly puts it: “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones…”
I personally believe that a trustworthy person is also a faithful person. Trust and faithfulness go hand in hand. I am sure that many of us have experienced being betrayed by a friend. We thought our friends knew and understood us but stabbed us at the back when we needed them most. If trust is lost, faithfulness goes with it.
Today, Jesus is reminding us to look for a trustworthy and faithful friend. Why? If we could be trustworthy and faithful to an earthly friend, then, we could be the same to God and to Jesus. What a wonderful reminder from Jesus: “No servant can serve two masters …You cannot serve God and mammon.”
