God’s Salt and Light

The WORD in other words (2018) by Sister Teresa Artita SSpS – Tarlac

Tuesday 10th Week in Ordinary Time

Learning to cook as a child, I recognized the value of salt.

“Mama, will you please taste if my cosido (fresh fish soup) is good?” “Hmmm… lemon taste is enough, just add a little salt, my dear.”

Just a little more salt, and the hot soup was flavorful which we all enjoyed.

“You are the salt of the earth,” or Jesus would say, “You are the flavor of the earth.” YOU, a special and unique flavor who can give joy … in your family, your circle of friends, your parish, your workplace. Jesus entrusts us with a mission to enhance the natural flavor of every person as we relate with them; to bring out the true flavor of the bigger community which has been dulled by worldly and conflicting values, broken relationships, or suppressive structures.

Ours is the call to season the earth so that our marginalized sisters and brothers may taste the compassion and mercy of Jesus. Ours is the challenge to season nature around us, be the catalyst to restore earth’s natural beauty, preserve and cultivate the blessings of Mother Earth for everyone to enjoy.

By our simple and joyful lifestyle, dedicated to our mission, we make Jesus attractive to each one. As synergists, flavor enhancers, or Jesus’ followers, we allow ourselves to go where God’s light sparkles and lead those entrusted to the Light of the Great Spirit. We sparkle as we shine in God’s light, and many other tiny sparks of Light are created as we widen our circle of communion especially with those in the periphery of society.

I pray, “May we humbly share tiny sparks of light each day to whoever comes to our lives. May we also taste the flavorful episodes in the lives of those whom we encounter.”
