Miracles Through Mary

January 7 / Before Epiphany

Most probably, Mary had a close affinity with the bridegroom’s family. Hence, together with Jesus and his newly formed group of disciples, Mary attended the wedding party.

Granted that she was related to the celebrating family, Mary must have been helping around serving the guests; otherwise, she would not have quickly noticed that wine had run out. So as not to embarrass the celebrants, Mary quietly approached Jesus and told him, “They have no more wine” (John 2, 3).

Let us not bother about the seemingly curt answer of Jesus. It is part of the hyperbolic Jewish language. Instead, let us focus on Mary’s quick instruction to the servants: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2,5).

Mary surely knew that whatever she asked him, he would do. Sure enough, Jesus went at once to the servants and told them: “Fill the jar with water.” When the jars were filled, he said: “Draw some out and take it to the steward” (John 2,8).

Then, the instant miracle – water changed into wine! Through Mary’s intercession, the first miracle happened.

The instant action of Mary showed her concern for the needs of the celebrating family. She does the same for us. She brings our needs and concerns to her Divine Son. Mary is our powerful intercessor. And Jesus, who has a soft heart for his mother, cannot refuse her.

Hence, the age-old motto: Ad Jesum per Mariam – To Jesus through Mary!
