The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Raul Caga SVD – Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay
Friday 5th Week of Lent
Introduction
A young man raised as an atheist was training to be an Olympic diver. One night, practicing alone in the moonlit pool, he climbed the highest board. As he stretched out his arms, he saw his shadow on the wall — in the shape of a cross. Overwhelmed, he knelt and asked God into his life. Moments later, the lights came on, revealing the pool had been drained for repairs. The shadow of the cross had saved his life.
The Gospel of Signs
In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ wondrous deeds are called signs. They are not mere miracles but testimonies of His mission and origin. After healing the man born blind — the sixth sign — Jesus confronted the Pharisees. Some admitted: “A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind.” Yet many chose to remain in darkness, refusing to recognize the Light of the world.
The irony is striking: the blind man saw, while those with sight became spiritually blind. The cure of the man born blind sealed their refusal to believe.
Light or Darkness
Like the diver who saw the cross and chose life, we too encounter signs of God’s presence. We can either close our hearts and remain in darkness, or allow His light to renew us. Jesus’ signs are invitations to faith — to see Him as one with the Father, the Light that conquers darkness.
Conclusion
The wondrous deeds of the Lord continue today. They may not always be dramatic, but they are real: moments of grace, protection, healing, and conversion. May we not miss the Light as the Pharisees did, but recognize it and let it transform us.
“Lord Jesus, Light of the world, open my eyes to see Your signs and renew my life in You.”
