The WORD in other words (2006) by Sister Flora Mallari SSpS
Thursday 5th Week of Lent
Introduction
The heartbreaking story of Terri Schiavo, who lived for fifteen years in a brain-damaged state and was eventually denied the feeding tube that sustained her, reminds us of the fragility of human life. Her parents fought tirelessly, and though their appeals were rejected, they found consolation in one Easter victory: Terri received the sacraments — communion, anointing, blessing, and absolution. As her priest said, “She received the blood of Christ.”
The Word That Gives Life
In today’s Gospel, Jesus assures us: “If a man is true to my word, he shall never see death” (John 8:51). Terri’s physical body starved, but her soul was nourished by Christ’s presence. We believe His promise: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (John 6:54). “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, even if he dies, shall live forever” (John 11:25).
Terri’s family and friends clung to these words. Even in pain and loss, they found comfort in Jesus’ testimony.
Our Call
What about us? Which word of Jesus do we keep in our hearts to sustain us in times of doubt, fear, rejection, or grief? Can we, like Terri’s supporters, say: “Yes, I know Him well, and I keep His word”?
Conclusion
This Lenten season, let us fill our minds with the words of Jesus and our hearts with love to keep them. His word is life, His word is hope, His word is victory over death.
“Lord Jesus, help me to keep Your word in my heart. May it sustain me in trials, comfort me in sorrow, and lead me to eternal life with You.”
