The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Atilano Corcuera SVD – Santo Niño Parish, Rio Tuba, Palawan
Wednesday 4th Week of Lent
Introduction
On this island, it is sadly known that some natives, when faced with serious difficulties, choose to end their lives. I myself was once called to bless the remains of a man who hanged himself after losing hope in his recovery despite costly hospital visits. For many, life seems worthwhile only if nothing disrupts it.
But the Gospel today speaks of a different kind of life — one that comes from hearing the word of Jesus and believing in Him. This life is meaningful even in the midst of sickness, suffering, and death.
Life Beyond Bread Alone
Scripture reminds us: “Man does not live by bread alone” (Deuteronomy 8:3). Human beings were created for a deeper purpose than physical well-being. That purpose is found in God’s word. To cling to His word in times of difficulty is to live. To live only for this world inevitably leads to despair, for as philosophers remind us, man is a being toward death. But living under the light of eternity changes everything.
Jesus promises: “…on hearing the voice of the Son of God, the dead will live” (John 5:25). Eternal life is found in Him alone.
The Comfort of God’s Presence
To live day by day in God’s presence is to have a companion, a comforter, and a consoler in affliction. As the first reading assures us, God’s Spirit sustains us even when human strength fails.
Conclusion
Life is not defined by the absence of suffering but by the presence of God. His word gives meaning, His Spirit gives strength, and His Son gives eternal life.
“Lord Jesus, help me to cling to Your word in times of trial. May Your presence be my comfort, and may Your promise of eternal life give me hope.”
