The WORD in other words (2020) by Sister Mildred Arcos SSpS – Irosin, Sorsogon
Friday in Octave of Easter
Peter and the other disciples expected Jesus to liberate them from oppression, but lo and behold, he was rather crucified and died on the cross. What a terrible and painful end! Frustrated, they journeyed back to their homes in Galilee and return to their occupation as fishermen.
Today’s Gospel episode narrates one of those days that “they caught nothing.” Jesus appeared on the shore and aware of their situation, he instructed them, “Cast your net over the right side of the boat…” And behold a big catch of fish! Yes, Jesus even knew the location of fish in the lake.
Painfully conscious of their shortcomings, Peter with impetus joy and remorse, jumped into the water and rushed to Jesus. Meanwhile his companions pulled the net full of 153 big fish. The number represent the all species fish of known during the time. In other word, result will be plentiful, inclusive, abundant and rich.
Indeed, such is the nature of the apostolic work. All nations on earth will be brought to Christ. The Gospel makes us realize that when Jesus directs our mission, there is no such things as an empty net. God will never be outdone in generosity, will never lack resources. And Jesus sees to sit that the net will never bread and will have room for everybody.
Something for us to reflect on:
- As a baptized Christian, I follow in the footsteps of Christ. Will I continue the mission of Jesus in good as well as in bad times? Like Peter, will I keep on fishing?
- Inspire of my frustrations, do I realize that my net hold through, that God is there, no matter what?
