Being a salt of the earth

The WORD in other words (2014) by Fr Samuel Clarin SVD – Holy Name University, Tagbilaran City

Thursday 7th Week in Ordinary Time

Salt is a powerful ingredient for cooking. Almost all our dishes are not complete without salt. People do not like food without salt because it taste flat.

The metaphor or symbol stands for our vocation as followers of Jesus. We are challenged to go beyond human wisdom, to be witnesses of a reality that God is not distant, apathetic creator but a loving Father to his children and that he is among us and within us.

We have witnessed how Jesus lived in obedience to the Father and like salt he continues to give taste and meaning to our existence. I believe it is our turn to be like him, to be the salt of the earth, to give flavor and hopefully to become Christ-like.

We do good deeds not to draw attention to ourselves, but rather by God’s grace, others may see the goodness of our Lord, his providence and love for everyone. This way, we can truly say that we become salt. Otherwise, if we follow Jesus out of mediocrity, then is is better “that great millstone will be put around our neck to be thrown into the sea.. to cut our hands off and go into Gehena… to cut our feet off and enter life crippled… to pluck our eye and enter the Kingdom of God with one eye…

The Gospel today is indeed good news to us; despite our littleness, we can still be salt of the earth in our little ways. Hopefully our ministry will lead others to the Lord and bring more glory to him.
