The WORD in other words (2019) by Fr Edwin Fernandez SVD – Divine Word College of Laoag, Ilocus Norte
Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
When I was in my parish assignment in Chile, I heard of the news about a luvia de estrelias (rain of stars) that would soon take place in the southern part of the country. I was told of hundreds of meteors lighting up the skies. I and other members of the community agreed to watch the rare spectacle. Waking up early in the morning and filled with excitement, we looked for a place where we could have a clear view of the sky. We spent hours waiting for the luvia de estrelias to occur but, to our utter disappointment, the stars did not show up.
The Feast of the Lord‘s Epiphany highlights two things. First, God takes the initiative to manifest/reveal Himself to the world. Secondly, the feast points to the importance of our humble searching for God that leads to an encounter with Him.
God has designed a salvific plan that goes beyond the borders of Israel. He is the God of all creation; he is the Father who loves all His children from various nations and cultures, and wants them to share in His very own life.
This is why the birth of Jesus, God‘s Beloved Son, does have a universal significance. It has not only brought light and hope to Israel, but also embraces all peoples. Jesus is the Light of the world through whom all things came to be.
Certainly, His becoming man affects the whole cosmic reality, and those whose hearts are attuned to God‘s will are able to read the signs that the Lord is giving about His human presence among them.
The magi had a pure and humble heart that searched for God in their lives. They were open to and longed for God‘s surprises. God thus guided them to the Savior through a star.
On the other hand, King Herod and the people of Jerusalem, including the priests and scribes, were completely unaware of the great mystery (the Messiah‘s long-awaited birth) that was already unfolding in their land.
What prevented them from believing in the magi and journeying with them? Was it their cultural and religious arrogance? Was it their spiritual complacency and inattentiveness to God‘s signs?
Even when we have received the gift of faith, may we continue to humbly seek and long for the Lord. Finding Him, let us bow and gaze at Him who alone is worthy of our adoration. our love and service.
