Persistence in faith

The WORD in other words (2018) by Brother Carl Milos Bulihan SVD – Japan

Wednesday 34th Week in Ordinary Time

Today, Jesus talks about perseverance. A few years back, my family bought an old 1968 Fiat car. It was very cheap, but not in running condition. We decided to make it a “project car.” However, since the car was almost 50 years old, it was difficult to find spare parts for it. I had been to many automotive stores in the Philippines just to look for the parts I needed. I searched the internet shops and even learned a little Italian and Polish just to get access to information and possible resources. Still, I only got a few things. Many times I was tempted to give up and sell the car feeling that I was just wasting time and money. Until recently, my brother informed me that, after five years, the engine started, but just for a few seconds. Even that short sign of life inspired me to continue with the project.

Similarly, becoming a Christian needs patience and persistence in living what Christ told us to do. Not all of us may experience persecution because of our faith, but sometimes we experience inner tensions. We feel that our Christian values seem to become irrelevant in this present age. We see many issues to fix: within ourselves, in our families, and in the wider society. Sometimes, we feel that applying the Gospel to address these issues seems to produce no concrete solution. Thus, we are tempted to give up and simply go with the flow.

Indeed, Jesus does not promise us an easy life and easy solutions. However, he reminds us that he will give us wisdom and protection to face everyday challenges. May the assurance from the Lord inspire us to persevere and continue with the “project” of becoming truly his disciples.
