The WORD in other words (2019) by Fr Edgar Bugtong SVD – Taiwan
Saturday 33rd Week in Ordinary Time
“Justification” is the first word that entered my mind while reflecting on the Gospel. The Sadducees would like to justify their position that the resurrection was illogical.
Their custom of Levirate Marriage (where the brother of a deceased man is obliged to marry his brother‘s widow), can be problematic for “at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be” after getting married with all seven brothers, if resurrection of the dead is at all possible.
Jesus, however, shifted the level of discussion from the human level to something higher. There are bigger realities than what we presently know, There are things that are beyond what our eyes can see. It‘s not because you have not seen “Leve, a small village in the township of Alishan (in Taiwan) that Leye does not exist. And this is the point of Jesus. He wants us to elevate our consciousness to the realm of the spirit and of God.
During our seminary days in Christ the King, we oftentimes sang the song “Look Beyond” by Darryl Ducote during our Eucharistic celebrations. It says, “Look beyond the bread you eat, See your Savior and your Lord. Look beyond the cup you drink, see His love poured out as blood.”.
It is a very meaningful song for me especially now that I am a priest. It is a call for us to see what is invisible to the eyes. Many times, things and events or even encounter with people can only be seen as meaningful or significant if we see them through the eyes of faith.
