Forgiveness and Judgment

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Glenn Paul Gomez SVD – Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City

Thursday 10th Week in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel points out three things.

First, about hypocrisy. During Jesus’ time, the scribes and Pharisees were perceived as hypocrites. They were experts in interpreting the laws but everything was just lip service. That is why, Jesus said: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

Second, about judgment. Jesus reminds us not to judge anyone. I’ve experienced being shouted at in front of many people, many times. I could have easily shouted back at that person but, through God’s grace, I did not. I’ve also experienced being called walang puso (no sympathy) maliciously. Weak persons usually lift themselves up by putting other people down, so they think.

Every time someone judges me unfairly, I only have to remember the words of Jesus: “Whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.”

Finally, about forgiveness. It’s not easy to forgive those who have hurt us from injustices. The word “forgive” seems to say, “give” it “for.” To whom will I give it for?

First, I have to give it for myself. The benefit of forgiving others is not only for the one who is forgiven to enjoy but also for the one who forgives. If I forgive, I free myself from emotional toxins which could poison my life.

Second, I could give it for God, knowing that, I, too, have many weaknesses and have committed many sins. If God forgives me every time I confess my sins, who am I not to forgive those who hurt me?
