The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Glenn Paul Gomez SVD – Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City
Wednesday 5th Week of Lent
With almost 8 billion inhabitants here on earth, with different belief systems, how can we know the truth? I remember our philosophy professor in Epistemology, Fr. Alois Lebherger, SVD, who kept on reminding us: “Humans can have true and certain knowledge!” What would he say to my question?
One of the aims of basic education is for the students to become critical. It is very important to know the difference between mere opinion and certified truth.
As I continually search for truth, I’m very grateful that I’ve known Jesus and his teachings. Christian doctrine gives us a clear vision of how to live in this challenging world and how to attain eternal life. As followers of Jesus, all Christians should do their reasonable best to imitate him.
The mysteries of the Holy Rosary are the best descriptions of how Jesus lived his life on earth: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous. Yes, to live meaningfully and to be free, I have to connect my own joy, sorrow, glory and light to the greater joy, sorrow, glory and light of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In this season of Lent, I’m personally reminded to embrace my cross and be willing to be crucified if I want to gain heaven.
Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel give me peace: “If you remain in my word…. you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
How serious are we when it comes to what the Bible says? The first step we take is to know God’s words by reading the Bible. When the Bible says: “Thou shall not kill,” we have to take it seriously by saying no to abortion or any other form of killing. When the Bible says: “Thou shall not steal,” we reject any form of stealing most of all corruption in all its dimensions.
The Bible contains all truth for our salvation, God’s Word is eternal, let us not lose the sense of eternity. In Christ, “May forever.” Words are rules of life and life in themselves. Let us know and live by God’s Word. Christ is the eternal Word. We are destined for eternity.
