The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Bernard Abrazado SVD – Divine Word College of Calapan
Thursday 2nd Week of Lent
Once a well-off student of Divine Word College invited me to dinner. He ordered so much food that we were unable to consume, and had no intention whatsoever of taking them out. Thinking of the many people who are hungry in the world, I felt uneasy. The student said: “Father, kung iuuwi ko ba iyan, mabubusog sila?” (Father, if I took that home, would they be filled?).
Today’s Gospel is the story of people who have little and people who have plenty. In this materialistic world, Jesus reminds us to care for our brethren. Caring does not necessarily mean giving them money or food. Caring also means building closer personal relationships with them. In fact, the Gospel does not speak of mere money or wealth. Deeper understanding of today’s Word tells us that the parable’s key element is about personal relationship and involvement in the lives of the needy.
In 2017 we celebrated the year of the parish as communion of communities. Various parishes encouraged its faithful not only to donate to the mission activities of the Church but also do home visitations to poor families and communities – listen to their stories, feel what they feel and be able to understand their situations. Particularly, in Divine Mercy Chaplaincy in Calapan City, the parish priest encouraged families to celebrate Sunday by attending the mass (Simba), visiting the poor and the marginalized (bisita) and bonding with family members.
As we reflect on today’s Word, let us not forget that it is in giving that we receive. Giving can be in the form of financial aid, or spending time and effort to hear, feel and be with our brothers and sisters. Remember, God loves cheerful givers! In the end, being with others means being with God!
