The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Anacleto Mananzan SVD – Divine Word Seminary, Tagaytay City
Tuesday 2nd Week of Lent
In the first reading, Isaiah describes Judah like Sodom and Gomorrah destined to be annihilated from the face of earth unless they repent. The same message for all of us unless we turn away from our sins and go back to the Lord. But Jesus Christ has revealed to us that going back to the Father is a joyful and hopeful moment. The joy of the Father to forgive us is beautifully portrayed in the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15,11-32).
In the gospel, Jesus recognized the authority and the important teachings of the Pharisees and Scribes based mainly on the Mosaic Law. So Jesus urged his disciples to listen to their teachings but not their example or way of life. One priest commented that it is really wrong not practice what we preach.
The readings make me reflect on the influences in my formation as a priest. First, Fr. Alphonse Mildner SVD greatly inspired me. He was not the best preacher. His conferences were dull as he just read from books or from his notes. But his compassion, love, kindness and holiness radiated. When I entered his room I always felt his fatherly care and his joy. He was always in the chapel praying. In the evening he walked around praying the rosary.
Second, Matthew 23:11,“The greatest among you must be your servant,” has inspired and helped me in my last 15 years in the priesthood. Before when the change of assignments was near I always felt anxious as to where I would be assigned and what position the superior would give me. The passage gave me the determination that wherever and whatever I would be assigned I would serve, I have peace and joy as a religious and missionary priest.
