The WORD in other words by Fr Rodel Liguid SVD – Germany

Friday 2nd Week of Advent

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.

(Reinhold Niebuhr)

Contentment is slowly becoming a strange word in modern society. Many of us are caught up with the fast and ever-changing world of computers, gadgets and cellphones. In fact, if one buys the latest cellphone, the moment the person pays for it, right there and then it starts becoming outmoded because in the next 3 to 6 months there will be a newer and better version in the market.

But what is alarming is that this attitude goes beyond buying stuff and items. Many of us find it difficult to be contented and happy with what we have or with our current situation, like jobs, relationships or the community that we belong to. The longing for something more, the craving for something better, tends to know no limits.

The paradox of it is that the more we try to feed ourselves the hungrier we are. Maybe, all the while, we are feeding ourselves with the wrong food! Maybe we are investing and focusing ourselves on the wrong stuff – things that do not last and leave us emptier than ever.

It is about time we deepen our personal relationship with the Lord. Go to Mass more often. Read the dusty Bible again. Find time to pray everyday. And know more about our faith. Let us reintroduce God in our daily lives and reconnect ourselves with “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).
